Lord Young of Acton is the Director of the Free Speech Union, an organisation set up amid the fury of the cancel mob in 2020 - that alone demonstrates his courage and willingness to defy the consensus enforcers. Since then the FSU has offered legal support and moral succour to many ordinary people who find themselves persecuted for things they've said. Toby has also become one of the intellectually sharpest new entrants into the House of Lords, having been appointed by Kemi Badenoch. In this episode, we discuss his work in Parliament, but also what 2026 will hold for the issue he has campaigned most prominently on; namely freedom of speech. In Lord Young's telling, even some of Sir Keir Starmer's own ministers are surprised by the severity of his authoritarian turn, and Reform's attempt to unwind hate speech legislation will meet ferocious resistance from peers and civil servants alike.
