Students offer English tours at Songshan cultural park

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is now offering guided tours in English, led by pint-sized tour guides from Guangfu Elementary School. Last year, the park launched a tour guide workshop with the school and the American Institute in Taiwan. Five months of training later, a team of sixth graders is now giving English-language tours of the historic site. Let’s take a look. In fluent English, students introduce Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. There are three tours on offer, covering the offices and warehouse, the tobacco factory, and the ecological landscape area. Lee Ai-yun Student The open space in this building is the baroque garden. Chen Ming-tse Student This office has an open counter made of marble. The floor is made of wood. Chou I-chin Student It was built after World War II and followed the Japanese style of design. Weng Tsun-ho Student The iron railings at the door separated men and women into different queues for inspection. Chen Shu-man Student The workers separated leaves and stems first and transported them via the conveyor belt to the cutting area. Chiang Chang-ling Student After cutting the leaves to shreds, we dry them and cool them. And mix them with different spices. The American Institute in Taiwan teamed up with Taipei Songshan Cultural and Creative Park to host workshops for nine sixth-grade students. In 2011 the site was transformed into a creative park, providing venues for cultural exhibitions and performances. This time, we specially organized a workshop with the American Institute in Taiwan and Guangfu Elementary School. I hope that through the training of student tour guides, the stories of the Songshan Tobacco Factory can continue to be passed on. The park hopes the workshop can help students become more proficient in English while teaching others about local history. Songshan Cultural and Creative Park says they will hold a workshop again next year, teaming up with a different school.
