This video output is a 20 minute video composed of four notable stories about Mercedes itself and what it has to show including, the fisherman, the fish port, and the “tinapahan” of Mercedes made by Grade 11 STEM-Curie of Mabini Colleges, Inc. Mercedes is a second class municipality in the province of Camarines Norte, Philippines. It is known as "The Belle of the Pacific". It is famous for its Siete Pecados or the seven islands of Mercedes. It is also known for its source of livelihood which is fishing. It is also popular for its notorious “Bulangan sa Pandawan” activity in the Fish Port. History of Mercedes. Since Spanish time this town has been called “Bara” of Mercedes. When a vessels is entering the harbor its runs a ground due to ignorance of the pilit canal leading to the wharf or due to inclement weather. This grounding of vessels was in a native dialect “NABARA”. However, a Spanish vessels with the captain’s wife Doña Mercedes, aboard also run aground in the bay. The good Doña was a truly virtuous woman who possessed all the attributes that endeared her to the people, particularly to the poor and unfortunate whom the good Doña seemed to have a special soft spot in her heart. When she died, in gratitude and in memory of her, the people decided to call the place “Mercedes”. Fisherman of Mercedes. Fisherman of Mercedes spend four to eight hours (approximately seventeen to thirty-three percent) of their time in the middle of the ocean. Strategic angling is used to catch a fish and for every fisherman every catch is a fulfillment, thinking they have something to take home to their families. Despite long and challenging days at the sea, family is the heartbeat of every fisherman’s life. Mr. Alcantara showed the process of fishing and mentioned what is life as a fisherman. Mercedes Fish Port. Mercedes fish port is one of the most successful fishing ports in Luzon. It is the largest fishing bowl in the Bicol Region, located in the eastern part of Camarines Norte. Mercedes fish port is known to be the third largest fishing ground in the country. One of the reasons why people love heading there early in the morning is because of its notorious “Bulungan sa Pandawan” activity, a trading practice where bidders whisper to the fish dealer his price and whoever bids the highest gets the fish. The interviewee showed what is life as a broker and what is the beauty in it. Tinapahan sa Mercedes. Mercedes is a province where the main focus of business is fish. If you try to look at every street or roads you’ll see some small stalls where you can buy smoked dried fish like tinapa for a very affordable price. “Tinapahan” is a factory that focuses on fish and is the main business here in Mercedes, which its main product is Tinapa. Tinapa is a fish cooked or preserved through the process of smoking. Mrs. Paday showed the process of making a “tinapa”, she also mentioned how she start her business and how did it foster. Tinapahan is where all the the fish (Tinapa) is smoked, dried and made.
