A departure from its predecessor, the $10 Liberty Head Eagle emerged after a nearly 34 year hiatus, replacing the Capped Bust design, which ceased being minted in 1804. Adding to the historic appeal of the coin is the MS64 grade by NGC. Designed by Chief Engraver, Christian Gobrecht in 1838, the Obverse depicts Lady Liberty facing left surrounded by 13 stars. A coronet inscribed with “Liberty” sits atop her grecian styled hair and shows the year the coin was minted below her image. While the overall design remained much the same, the motto “In God We Trust” was added to a banner above the heraldic style Eagle design after 1866. More natural-appearing than the previous design, the Reverse shows an American Bald Eagle, with a shield at it’s breast, clutching a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. Graded Mint State 64 is considered to be in between Choice, and Gem Uncirculated condition; making the coin a fine investment.
