Buy the container that will serve as the tupperdor. 2. Humidify your tupperdor. 3. Add a calibrated hygrometer. 4. Season and add Spanish cedar (optional). 5. Put your cigars in and let them acclimate. [00:59] 1. Choosing a Tupperdor Firstly, ONLY a container with an airtight seal will work. We like the Sistema Klip-It range, food-grade plastics without BPA or phthalates and therefore suitable for all consumables, including cigars. You can also use glass containers with airtight seals, like the Pro Glass one we have here. [02:28] 2. Humidification We recommend Boveda for humidification. It's a two-way system which either emits or absorbs moisture depending on the container's relative humidity. Therefore, a Boveda pack will not over-humidify your tupperdor. One-way solutions like gels and water dishes keep releasing moisture after you've reached your target humidity. This can cause mould and other damage to your collection. A steady climate for your cigars with no spikes in RH or temperature is essential, and Boveda helps maintain that. You need 1 Boveda pack per 25 count capacity of your humidor. For the most economical tupperdor variation, all you need is the container, Boveda packs, and your cigars. [05:25] 3. Hygrometers Of course, a hygrometer lets you monitor your tupperdor's internal climate and ensure the cigars will be safe and sound. Smart sensors are your best bet, since you can check their readings without having to look in the humidor. Our favorite is the CigSor, but that's about $200. The Boveda Butler is only $20, and is an excellent smart sensor. A basic digital hygrometer will also do; we like Quality Importers' HygroSet II, at $15. Boveda's calibration kits make calibrating these sensors easy. Do NOT use an analog hygrometer. They're too inaccurate to be of any use in cigar storage. Also, don't put your hygrometer directly on top of your Boveda packs, so they get a better overall reading of the microclimate. [08:09] 4. Spanish Cedar Spanish cedar imparts many desirable qualities to cigars. It must be seasoned before using, though, or it will adversely affect RH. You can use trays, as we have here, shelves, or veneer strips. Advantages of Spanish cedar: • It's insect-repellent. • Wood is a natural membrane, releasing moisture in respone to sudden drops in RH. • It imparts a subtle flavor and aroma to your cigars. Note that other types of cedar do NOT have the same benefits! Ultimately, this is the most macked-out tupperdor you can get. It has a smart hygrometer connected to your phone, Spanish cedar trays, two-way humidification, and an airtight seal. Because it's transparent, store it out of direct sunlight, or ultraviolet light will impact your cigars' quality. Also, keep it away from A/C or heat vents to avoid temperature spikes.
