What is a Chinese painting? Is it the pigments used? Is it a silk or paper supporting it? Is it the artist who makes it? Do plants, animals, landscapes, figures, and events it depicts define a Chinese painting? What have been the changes and continuity in Chinese artists’ goals and intentions throughout the centuries? Above all, to what extent do Chinese artists consider painting a vehicle for self-expression? ____________ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 In this talk Dr Hongxing Zhang (Senior Curator of East Asia at Victoria & Albert Museum) approaches these questions based on his research for and experience of the much acclaimed “Masterpieces of Chinese Painting 700-1900” he curated at the V&A in 2013-14. The talk also addresses the challenges and hopes for collecting and displaying Chinese paintings for public and private collections in the U.K. The event, organised by the Manchester China Institute (MCI), took place on Tuesday, 1 April 2025 at the Portico Library and was moderated by Dr Zhaokun Xin, Lecturer in Chinese Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester.
