When it comes time to fit a new battery to a car, one battery looks very similar to another, and if it is about the correct physical size and the terminals are in the right place, it should be good enough. You might have been able to get away with this sort of thing in the past, but now you might be about to cause the customer and yourself some trouble. There are now many different sorts of batteries designed to accommodate the new features fitted to modern vehicles and programming that might be required. Wet cell, lead acid batteries have been used in automotive applications many years. These are now being referred to as Starting, Lighting, Ignition or SLI batteries as there are now more advanced types of batteries used for more modern cars. Some are Enhanced Flooded Battery or EFB, others are Absorbent Glass Mat or AGM batteries. Both designs have larger capacity and the ability to charge and discharge faster, and for many more cycles. The main reason for the introduction of these new battery designs is to accommodate the high demands of the engine stop start systems, which a SLI battery would not be able to cope with. Modern vehicles have Battery Energy Management or BEM systems which use a current sensor mounted on the negative battery terminal to record the amount of current flow and adapt the reduced capacity as the battery ages. To work correctly the BEM needs to know if the battery has been replaced, and if the specification of that battery is different from the last one fitted. If the battery is different, the new specifications will have to be programmed in with a compatible diagnostic tool. If the new battery’s specifications are the same, the new battery only needs to be registered with the BEM. However there seems to be two different types of BEM systems. Open BEM and Closed BEM.
