Joshua Silva never imagined that routine lower back pain and gastrointestinal issues would change his life. Like many people, he assumed the discomfort would fade with time. Instead, the pain worsened—until one sleepless night forced him to visit the emergency room in Houston, Texas. That decision may have saved his life. A CT scan revealed an inflamed appendix, requiring an immediate appendectomy. But the scan also uncovered something far more serious: an abnormality in Joshua’s left kidney. What began as a routine emergency visit quickly turned into a frightening unknown. Doctors told him the kidney issue could be a benign cyst—or it could be kidney cancer. Following the appendectomy, Joshua endured an agonizing four-week wait to see a urologist. Without the need for a biopsy, the diagnosis became clear: clear cell renal cell carcinoma, the most common form of kidney cancer. At just over thirty years old, Joshua was suddenly facing the possibility of losing a kidney—and confronting what survivorship might look like. Because the diagnosis came close to the holidays, the urologist accelerated the timeline for surgery, assembling a care team before vacation schedules intervened. Joshua was scheduled for a partial nephrectomy, a procedure that would attempt to remove the tumor while sparing the kidney. However, the outcome depended entirely on the tumor margins. Joshua went into surgery knowing there was a real chance he could wake up with only one kidney. When he regained consciousness, his first question was about his kidney. The answer brought relief: the surgeon successfully removed the cancer and spared the kidney. For Joshua Silva, it was a moment of profound gratitude and hope. Recovery, however, was not without setbacks. The incision site from the partial nephrectomy was very close to the appendectomy incision, which had not fully healed. This led to a painful infection, swelling, and redness in his abdomen. Antibiotics initially failed to help, and Joshua spent three difficult weeks in pain and uncertainty—once again fearing he might lose his left kidney. A revised medication regimen finally worked. After several more weeks, the swelling subsided, the pain disappeared, and follow-up scans confirmed the best possible news: Joshua was cancer free. Today, Joshua Silva reports his health is about 98 percent of what it was before his symptoms began. With the help of post-treatment medication and weekly therapy sessions, he has regained strength, confidence, and normalcy. Most importantly, he has returned to one of his greatest passions—playing golf—now back on the links with a single-digit handicap. Joshua’s story is a powerful reminder that persistent symptoms should never be ignored and that early imaging can uncover life-threatening conditions long before they are expected. His journey through kidney cancer, clear cell renal cell carcinoma, appendectomy complications, and partial nephrectomy highlights resilience, expert medical care, and the importance of listening to your body.
