My name is Ryan Leone. I’m a bestselling novelist, screenwriter, and producer. I was addicted to drugs and alcohol for nearly twenty years before I found any success. Drug use led to dire consequences and I have spent time in county jails, as well as federal and state prison. I am now sober and reformed but hold criminal justice reform matters close to my heart because of my life experience. Police brutality is nothing new but the advent of cell phone video recording has illuminated the issue to the masses. I have been beat up by police officers and prison guards on several occasions. All three of my prison terms were for non-violent offenses I can attest firsthand to the severity of the issue. It’s real and it needs to end. Frank Hernandez, a police officer in based in Los Angeles, Ca has been with LAPD for twenty years. He was recently identified in a KTLA video for savagely beating up a homeless man in Boyle Heights, CA. on April 27. It’s clear that this was an unwarranted act of violence and that the victim didn’t deserve such an incredibly violent attack. The person who filmed the video wants to remain anonymous because he’s scared of repercussions. I’m not scared of them. I have turned my life around. Police officers are supposed to be civil servants to serve and protect us — the people. I call for LAPD to fire Frank Hernandez immediately. We are in a a time of international calamity. We need unity instead of divide. I expect more from the police. Frank Hernandez is clearly an unstable man. He had already been involved with three shootings — one of which created social upheaval and violent protests in Westlake ten years ago. We deserve a better quality of law enforcement. We deserve to feel safe as citizens from thugs masquerading as civil servants. Thank you for your time.
