Simple magnetism is the study of magnets and the magnetic forces they produce. A magnet is a material that can attract certain metals such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. Every magnet has two ends called poles, known as the north pole and the south pole. Magnetic forces are strongest at these poles. When two magnets are brought close to each other, they exert forces on one another. Like poles repel each other, while unlike poles attract each other. This means that a north pole will repel another north pole but will attract a south pole. These forces act without direct contact and are part of the magnetic field around a magnet. A magnetic field is the region around a magnet where magnetic forces can be detected. The pattern of the magnetic field can be shown using iron filings or by drawing magnetic field lines. These field lines always move from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet and show the direction of the magnetic force. Magnetism has many practical applications in everyday life. It is used in devices such as electric motors, generators, loudspeakers, and compasses. A magnetic compass works by using a small magnetized needle that aligns itself with the Earth's magnetic field, helping people find directions.
