I was traveling from Los Angeles International Airport LAX to Tokyo not so long ago and stopped to wonder why garbage and recycling is so different between Japan and the USA. At LAX, ask trays are filled with garbage and catching on fire... Trash cans are far and few between and once you find one they are usually overflowing with garbage of all sorts... combustibles mixed with recyclables and just a total disorganized mess! In Japan, recycling and garbage sorting is taken very seriously. I stopped into Pacifico Yokohama where they just happened to have the most detailed and organized and elaborate garbage cans for any type of waste you might have on you. Pictures are clean, written in Japanese and English and the garbage is frequently removed and fully recycled. 100% Recycling is their motto. As an American, I know we can do a bit better than the mess on display at an International Airport like LAX. This is certainly an area where America can learn something from a simple idea in Japan.. I believe something like this implemented here can improve American garbage collection and recycling as well. All videos presented in both Japan and English.
