(Chapter 1 ) (Opening Verses) • Verse 1 “Bow down with my head to Lord Viṣṇu, the ruler of the three worlds. From many scriptures I shall compose this collection of political wisdom.” • Verse 2 “By studying these teachings properly, a noble man comes to know the true nature of Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kāma (desire), and Mokṣa (liberation).” • Verse 3 “That conduct which is performed for the welfare of the people, and through which Dharma is understood—only that is truly Dharma.” (Practical Wisdom) • “With the intention of benefiting people, I shall compose a text whose knowledge makes them wise.” • “Even a wise man suffers when teaching dull students, caring for bad women, or keeping company with the miserable.” • “A bad wife, a treacherous friend, a servant who talks back, or living in a house with a snake—these are certain death.” • “One should save money for times of adversity, protect one’s wife even at the cost of wealth, and protect oneself even at the cost of wealth and wife.” • “Wealth should be saved for adversity. But where is adversity for the wealthy? Wealth, though accumulated, may vanish suddenly.” • “One should avoid living in a country where there is no respect, no livelihood, no relatives, no opportunity to learn, or no skill to acquire.” • “A place lacking these five—a rich person, a Vedic scholar, a king, a river, and a physician—should not be stayed in even for a single day.” (Wisdom & Women) • “One should accept nectar even from poison, gold even from filth, knowledge even from a lowly person, and a virtuous woman even from a humble family.” • Verse “The diet of women is twice that of men, their intellect is four times greater, their courage six times stronger, and their passion eight times more intense.”
