Skopje has seen two big redesigns. After its independence, the Skopje 2014 project was meant to give the city the allure of a European capital, in line with new ideas about the history of the Macedonian nation. This was not the first time the city got a facelift; in the 60s, the city was hit by an earthquake. A Japanese architect by the name of Kenzo Tange was brought in to create a new vision of the city. He came up with a brutalist vision of ribbed concrete and revolutionary shapes. What do these redesigns have to say about the nation of Macedonia?
