We saw what is inside. We were able to make I would say a fair diagnosis. This has guide us to confirm that Noor Jahan has a good chance of survival but also on this condition (that it gets) the best procedure and the best treatment which is required physically and medically in the coming days and the weeks.” 6. Various of Amir Khalil, Director of Four Paws talking to caretakers next to elephant 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Amir Khalil, Director of Four Paws: “We saw that the diaphragm, or the membrane at the pelvis due to the trauma that happened was broken. The intestine going to the pelvis area – a lot of organs pressuring the bladder. The elephant has problem in urination so a lot of side effects which created all this ordeal we have. We know now which treatment the elephant needs, not only medical treatment but also the physical treatment, the massage for the elephant, the water massage. The movement -- the elephant should not be chained from today. The elephant should be in a bigger area, should move. This is what Noor Jahan needs.” 8. Various of medical equipment 9. Various of elephant Noor Jahan walking STORYLINE: Veterinarians said they performed a critical procedure to save a sick elephant at a zoo in southern Pakistan on Wednesday. Noor Jehan was brought to Karachi with three other elephants more than a dozen years ago. Now 17 years old, videos of her with her head against a tree and struggling to stand have caused alarm in Pakistan. Noor Jehan's plight was previously highlighted by campaigners and international veterinarians in 2021 and 2022. An eight-member team from the Austrian animal welfare organization Four Paws did the complex procedure with the help of a crane and a fire truck propping the elephant up. The team included veterinarians from Egypt, Bulgaria and an elephant husbandry expert from Germany. After a series of procedures, the elephant has a good chance of survival, said Dr Amir Khalil, who led the team. The experts did an ultrasound and found a large hematoma in her abdomen, which is affecting her organs. Noor Jehan’s pelvis was broken due to trauma and there is an abscess growing in that area. Khalil said there are many treatments available for her, including water massage and movement. The governor of Sindh province, where Karachi is located, was at the zoo for the procedure, as were animal rights activists. Khalil said authorities have agreed to relocate Noor Jehan to a better place with her fellow elephant, Madhubala, because her current conditions are unsuitable. =========================================================== Clients are reminded to adhere to all listed restrictions and to check the terms of their licence agreements.
