On this trip, we faced rough waters and fast-moving currents, but with patience and the right adjustments, we managed to turn the day around. Here’s how it went: The last few days of fishing in the Florida Keys have been tough. Yesterday, we went out with high hopes, but the fishing was not as we hoped it would be. Determined to give it another shot, we waited until the afternoon for the wind to calm down before heading out. We left the dock around 1 PM, hoping for better conditions. Unfortunately, once we got out there, we realized it was still rough, with the current ripping at 3 mph. This made fishing challenging, but we committed to snapper fishing in the Florida Keys regardless. The strong current limited our options, so we hit a nearby spot. For hours, nothing—until finally, we hooked a mutton snapper. Knowing the conditions would be tough, we brought electric reels and heavy leads to help us stay on the bottom. After that first fish, we moved spots and anchored. Finally the bite turned on! We primarily targeted mutton snapper, but also caught and released some red snapper. On top of that, we got lucky and hooked into a few mahi, an amberjack, and a hammerhead shark. While the trip was ultimately a success, we took away some important lessons.. especially about how to fish in strong current.
