Casa Propia: The Cultural Meaning of Homeownership

This study examines what homeownership truly means for Spanish-dominant Hispanic adults in Southeast Florida. While housing is often discussed in terms of income, credit, and mortgage rates, many families understand it as something deeper: sacrifice, stability, dignity, and a promise for the next generation. Using an ethnographic approach, this research explores how meanings of “casa propia” are formed and negotiated through everyday conversations in families, community spaces, professional forums, and faith-based settings. Instead of focusing solely on statistics, it also considers language, interaction, and shared cultural values. The study argues that homeownership is not only a financial outcome but a culturally embedded process shaped by family narratives, migration experiences, and future aspirations. By understanding how these meanings are constructed, policymakers and housing professionals can design approaches that better reflect how Spanish-dominant Hispanic communities think about homeownership.
