Few people have walked up Mico Quemado (Burning Monkey). a little-known bioreserve mountain range in El Progreso, Honduras. Its trail is steep, treacherous—and filled with wild animals such as jaguars, boars, monkeys, and parrots. Vast species of plants, natural springs, and mountain-top food stands can be found on the trail. As I hiked up the grueling trail to see if I had the strength and resolve to make it to the top, I saw snakes and sources of fresh water; met "the fittest retiree" in El Progreso and people who lived completed off the grid; and tried "the most organic" baleadas in town, mountain-top orange juice and coconut water, and spiced "stick" coffee. I asked countless people why the mountain was called "Burning Monkey" and got some interesting answers.
