Clashes after death of teenager hit on head by tear gas canister during anti-govt protests last summ

(11 Mar 2014) Clashes erupted between riot police and hundreds of demonstrators in central Istanbul on Tuesday, hours after the death of a teenager who was injured during last summer's anti-government protests. Demonstrators gathered in Istanbul's Taksim Square to protest against Berkin Elvan's death and called on the government to resign. After making announcements for the crowd to disperse, riot police pushed the crowd back with water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets. Berkin was hit in the head with a police tear-gas canister in June last year, and many people hold Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling AK Party accountable for his death. Elvan remained in a coma until his death on Tuesday morning in Istanbul. His family said Berkin, who turned 15 in January, was on his way to buy bread when he was caught up in a street protest. Several police officers were questioned about Berkin's head injury but none have been charged.
