The death of Pat Schroeder leaves a huge gap for womens rights and family rights. Pat Schroeder obituary states that she passed away peacefully at a Celebration Florida hospital. Join us as Kim Hawk, the Fairy Godmother of Real Estate, interviews a fellow Celebration Florida resident, former Congresswoman Pat Schroeder. Pat Schroeder has been influential in making changes to support children, family and women's rights during the 1970s and 1980's. Pat is an author of the book, "24 Years of Housework and the Place is Still a Mess". Pat tells the story of what it was like to be one of 15 women in a class of 550 students at the Harvard Law School, where she met her husband, Jim. "The Dean was then Irwin Griswold and he did not want women, but I learned something very early on, which was terrific. He had all of us to dinner one night and he said, I voted against you coming here. I just wanna know why you're going to, you came here because, so we're all sitting there, you know, white knuckle trying to think of something profound to say. And this wonderful young woman from from Los Angeles in my class said, I'm here cuz I couldn't get in at Yale.He went nuts. He said, no, Yale's always taken more. No, that's not right. And, and that's when I learned how you really respond to this. But he went on to say he was so sure we'd never use it, that he let in that many more men after they counted how many more women." Pat became a member of the armed services committee so she could see where all the money was going. But they had never had a woman and they had never had an African American on the committee. So they were given one chair. When some of her friends used to introduce her saying it was the only half-ass thing she did when she was in Congress! Pat tells the story of meeting Nelson Mandela and Bishop Tutu on a trip to South Africa. "Um, and all of a sudden Tutu says, we're not starting until these people come up here and I can wash their feet. And I'm like, no, I cannot go up there. And I have Bishop Tutu wash my feet. I mean, there are things I got but that I can't do. And he was absolutely insistent he was not gonna start. And so I may have gone to jail, but all of that, he said, I never thought I could vote my entire life because of people like this, I'm gonna get to vote and I'm gonna wash their feet. Oh he did. But it was amazing." Oh, pat, that is a great, that is a great story. There are a lot of good things can come out of all that hard work you put into the place. So when Pat says 24 years of housework, it's because she ran undefeated. She was in Congress for 24 years straight.
