The Winter Buddhist Studies Course will begin with the study of the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha’s well-known discourse on the four foundations of mindfulness with the first foundation, mindfulness of the body. The Buddha recognized the importance of having a training ground for the development and maintenance of present moment awareness. In one well-known passage the Buddha said: "When one thing is practiced & pursued, the body is calmed, the mind is calmed, thinking & evaluating are stilled, and all qualities on the side of clear knowing go to the culmination of their development. Which one thing? Mindfulness immersed in the body. When one thing is practiced & pursued, ignorance is abandoned, clear knowing arises, the conceit 'I am' is abandoned, latent tendencies are uprooted, fetters are abandoned. Which one thing? Mindfulness immersed in the body." Developing a clear, stable, and continuous interest in the current of bodily sensations is healing and liberating. It can lead to a deep renunciation of the many entanglements the thinking mind constructs. Instead, awareness can open to what is simple and immediate: “There is a body; it feels like this now.” The Buddhist Studies courses are designed for people who have attended three or more mindfulness meditation retreats and have a commitment to daily meditation practice. This ongoing program is designed to deepen our understanding through the study and application of the teachings of the Buddha. The course includes dharma talks, small and large group discussions, and guided sitting time. Participants will be expected to use the teachings as a focus for their daily practice. All programs at Common Ground are offered freely in the spirit of generosity.
