The biggest tell-tale is that the pads on one side of a caliper and/or just one caliper compared to the other side of the car (left/right) wears more or less. Uneven pad wear is usually a good indcator that the slides are not working properly and/or the piston is not extending/retracting fully. Time for a rebuild!
