Jim Egan was a professional photographer in Providence RI for 40 years. In his spare time, he became fascinated with the Newport Tower in Touro Park, Newport RI. When fellow NEARA Member Professor William Penhallow discovered astronomical alignments in the windows of the Tower in the early 1990s, Jim set out to photograph them. Not only was Penhallow correct, but Jim found additional alignments. Since then, he has written over a dozen books on the history of the Tower and Rhode Island history. Twelve years ago, Jim opened the Newport Tower Museum, 50 steps northeast of the tower, where he has greeted curious visitors from every state in the union and many countries across the Globe, even someone from the Galapagos Islands. Jim’s copiously illustrated performance-lecture will discuss five topics: 1. The various theories about who built the Newport tower (Vikings, Templars, Chinese, Portuguese, or colonial settlers) as well as his own thesis (Elizabethan colonists in 1583). 2. The origin of the state name of Rhode Island. 3. Six reasons why the Newport Tower was not a windmill and was never used as such. 4. What people thought about the Newport Tower in the 1700s, 1800s and 1900s. 5. How NEARA’s Optically Stimulated Luminescence sediment- testing proposal would help date the Tower.
