Better You Than Me (2003) http://hightonesonofabitch1.bandcamp.... Formed from the ashes of Oakland prog/doom sludge masters Cruevo and preceeding Sleep's Matt Pike-fronted Bay Area metal "supergroup" Kalas, High Tone Son of a Bitch was a "supergroup" unto itself, pulling together the talents of musicians who played with bands like Noothgrush, Hammers of Misfortune, Men of Porn, Neurosis, and others. Cut short by tragedy, HTSOB were true Bay Area pioneers. High Tone Son of a Bitch Oakland, California =================== 1. Ten Mountain High 00:00 2. Better You Than Me 06:47 3. Fortune's Crown 11:41 4. Last Dance 15:44 *** "Better You Than Me" is the first and only physical release from this San Francisco and Oakland, CA band. It's an solid, epic stoner rock album, not as darkly psychedelic, or as doom metal-tinged as HTSOB's second, unreleased album "Velocipede". "Better You Than Me" is notable in part for it's connection to the legacy of a number of other notable Bay Area bands, and for the participation of Neurosis bass player Dave Edwardson on Moog synthesizer on the outtro of the final song "Last Dance". High Tone Son of a Bitch was in some ways a precursor to the Matt Pike-fronted project Kalas, a band guitarist Paul Kott and early HTSOB drummer Scott Plumb played in together later. HTSOB, it could be argued, was formed from the ashes of the popular Oaklnad psychedellic sludge/doom crust band Cruevo, which Paul and Scott had founded. Cruevo had a single release out, a split with fellow Oakland sludge band Brainoil, and Cruevo was playing Oakland house parties with bands like High On Fire as they were first coming up in the very early 00s. Ron Nichols was playing bass in Cruevo's final lineup when the band broke up in the explosive fashion typical for so many underground bands. Lineup changes, sex, and drugs all played their part in Cruevo's demise, but it was differing visions of their rock n' roll legacy that led guitarist Paul Kott and bass player Ron Nichols to part ways with drummer Scott Plumb early on. Paul's brother Andrew Kott had joined the band on guitars, and Scott's main concern was Paul, Andrew, and Ron's interest in exploring melodic vocals instead of the crusty punk rock screaming style that Cruevo had been known for. "Better You Than Me" was written in very fluid fashion, with the brothers quickly spitting out riffs, and Ron's bass lines fitting like puzzle pieces. The guitar riffs are all catchy and heavy, but it's Ron's bass lines that set the songwriting on this album apart from a typical stoner rock band. In addition, HTSOB teamed up on this record with well-regarded drummer Andee Conners, known more for a more eclectic style in previous bands like A Minor Forest. On vocals, the band brought Portland, OR transplant Scott Wagner in on vocals. Scott's vocal power helps set the band well apart from their contemporaries at the time the album was recorded and released. "Better You Than Me" was released by Shifty Records and Unknown Controller in the United States, and by Spain's Throne Records in Europe. HTSOB toured with Brainoil on the West Coast to support the release of the EP, but the release was better received in Europe than it was in the US even though the band never toured overseas at all. *** released April 1, 2003 Vocals: Scott Wagner Bass: Ron Nichols Guitars: Paul Kott Guitars: Andrew Kott Drums: Andee Connors Moog Synthesizer: Dave Edwardson Engineered by: Alex Newport Produced by Alex Newport and HTSOB Recorded and Mixed at: Tiny Telephone in San Francisco, CA Mastered by: John Golden Additional Mastering by: Brian Lipski Photography by: Melanie Nichols
