One of the leading voices in architecture, Jeanne Gang is renowned for projects that connect people, their communities, and the natural world. The founding partner of Studio Gang and a Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, her major civic and cultural projects include Chicagoland’s Writers Theatre, Chicago River Boathouses, Aqua Tower, The St. Regis Chicago, and Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. For Chicago Humanities, Gang digs into how the horticultural technique of grafting—joining a new plant to an older one so they can grow and thrive as one—inspires a fresh paradigm for sustainable design. Drawing on her latest book, The Art of Architectural Grafting, Gang will discuss how we can better recognize the cultural and environmental value in our existing building stock and expand on it in ways that bring new beauty and opportunity to our communities. Architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang is the founding principal of Studio Gang, an architecture and urban design practice based in Chicago, New York and San Francisco. Jeanne is recognized internationally for a design process that foregrounds the relationships between individuals, communities, and environments. Her award-winning analytical and creative approach has produced some of today’s most innovative architecture, including the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership at Michigan’s Kalamazoo College; Writers Theatre, a professional theater on Chicago’s North Side; and the 82-story Aqua Tower in downtown Chicago. She is currently designing major projects throughout the Americas and Europe, including the Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of Natural History in New York; the new United States Embassy in Brasília, Brazil; and mixed-use towers in Toronto and Amsterdam. Jeanne is the author of three books and her work has been published and exhibited widely, including at the Venice Architecture Biennale, MoMA, and the Art Institute of Chicago. She has taught extensively, including at the Harvard Graduate School of Design where she was recently appointed Professor in Practice of Architecture.
