Some say the first rule whenever you get on HF in ham radio is to "Listen, listen, listen" before you ever transmit. So that's what I'm doing. I'm checking the bands to see "where" I can hear. In this case while on at a vacation rental in the Texas Hill Country on New Year's Eve 2024 I was hearing mostly the USA. As you can see I have a Yeasu FT-991a rig. I don't have hexbeam, dipole, or a beam. I use an end-fed wire antenna (approx. 66ft. long). It's just temporarily deployed with the feed point on top of a flower pot out on the front porch about 2-3 feet off the ground. The radiating element is stretched out in a straight line and sloping up to the closest tree branch about 8-9 feet high off the ground. That's it. The antenna is cut for 40, 20, 15 & 10 meters and can handle UP TO 50 watts of power. I love this little antenna. Hope to get a 100 watt version of this antenna soon. Here's something I've lived by so far in my amateur radio career. Just experiment and see what works best for your shack. Just like anything else, it takes patience and lots of questions to my Elmers...and lots of watching other amateur radio operators on Youtube. In the end, DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED no matter what anyone tells you. Don't take what the grumpy old ops personally. Ignore them. You just have to figure out what works for you and you'll have a blast!
