Duchess of Sutherland battles Old Hill bank- The Welsh Marches Express 13/11/21

Vintagetrains Welsh Marches Express from Tyseley to Hereford and return with LMS Princess Coronation Class 6233 Duchess of Sutherland The outward journey was filmed firstly at Small Heath. After the steep climb out of Tyseley Steam Trust the Duchess passes through with the cylinder drain cocks open creating a lot of steam and atmosphere. Moving on I catch the Duchess again at Wolverhampton with seconds to spare passing through platform 1 to the delight of unsuspecting passengers. The trip would arrive late at Hereford by 153 minutes. Reports of an incident around the Ludlow area meant that the train was heavily delayed. This of course had a knock on effect for the return journey leaving Hereford. The return leg left 57 minutes behind schedule so was in for a bit of a long wait. At 20:06, 87 minutes behind schedule the Duchess began the gruelling climb of Old Hill bank in typical wet autumn conditions. The engine could be heard in the distance making good progress up the start of the bank before the steep and unforgiving climb of Old Hill would try and catch the Duchess out. Multiple times the Duchess lost her feet but the crew did an amazing job to keep her going. With the sanders on and a bit of assistance from 47773 at the back, the engine erupted through the station at Old Hill with a couple more slips but made good progress towards the tunnel. A brilliant display at Old Hill and one of the most entertaining climbs since the double headed Panniers in 2017. Also great to meet new people and see old friends jamie, Charlie, jack, Paul, john, and others I may have forgot.
