Join me in an exclusive tour of the Getty Museum’s groundbreaking exhibition “GUSTAVE CAILLEBOTTE - PAINTING MEN” for OUT MAGAZINE in which I decode some of his beautiful and daringly queer works, which revolutionized gender norms in art history and even allowed space for same-sex desire. Caillebotte was an Impressionist painter but, unlike fellow artists like Manet, Renoir and Degas who focused on female subjects and clearly heterosexual settings, Caillebotte depicted what interested him, his bachelor friends, male workers and muscular sportsmen, which gave him the perfect excuse to portray athletic men in revealing outfits, as well as naked men. Whether Caillebotte was gay or not is one of the many mysteries surrounding his life and his work. We know that he ignored the expectations for men of his class by being a lifelong bachelor but he included in his will a female companion, Charlotte Berthier, who barely appears in his work. To complicate this dilemma, there is a recently found surprising family photograph in which Caillebotte poses dressed in women's clothing and wig with total ease. Make sure you read all about it on my Instagram @breakingthegaycodeinart and on my article for OUT MAGAZINE after watching the video. Thanks so much to the Getty Museum for the opportunity to visit this extraordinary show and to Jason Jenn and Vojislav Radovanovic from LA Art Documents for their amazing work producing this video. .
