Today I visited Paddy and some of his fellow home owners in, award winning Wildflower Alley. This gated alley long 'community nature reserve lies in the upper Ormeau area of south Belfast. Paddy kindly took me on a walk up and down and showed me what ordinary people can do when they put their minds and their muscles to it. The once rather dirty, rather unpleasant, never go there unless you have to, alley, has been transformed since covid, into a play area, chat area and linear well being, green place apart garden. A place found at the yard back door, to unwind and meet new and old friends. A place where everyone now knows everyone on first name terms. A place where there is laughter, ideas are put forward,. A place where the weather and flowers are the main topic of conversation. A magical place where children can play safely and happily. It's a place where community, as we once remember it, has literally been reborn! It all began back in 2020. The residents whose homes back on to the alley, cleaned up the dull space and began planting flowers and seeds and decorating it as the coronavirus lockdown was implemented. It meant that neighbours, some of whom had never met or had reason to meet, did so in a joint garden cause. As friendships grew the alley has continued to flourish and as you might expect, there are more plans afoot for the future. Back in the early days, word of what was happening in this hidden back alley, got back to the media. Gardening expert Diarmuid Gavin wanted to drop by give encouragement. Footage taken of the revitalized alley, by his team, was uploaded online and has been viewed a staggering three million times. Well done folks! Thanks, especially to Paddy, for making me welcome in your hidden gem of an alley. I am inspired by what you have achieved in so short a time. Long may you reign!
