#11 Mauro Porro's Charleston Six - 2006 Whitley Bay International Jazz Festival : Clarinettist/C-Melody saxist and arranger Mauro Porro formed this lovely little band in Milan just a year ago: the remarkable thing is that Mauro is aged just 19 and the average age of the band is mid-twenties. He was inspired to play jazz by hearing those other fine bands from Milan, The Milano Hot Jazz Orchestra and the Milano Jazz Gang (both of whom have played at Whitley Bay in past years), but decided to do something a little-bit different to both of them: instead of the bigger bands or the Turk Murphy style, he has opted for the work of Red Nichols, Miff Mole and Jimmy Dorsey, Phil Napoleon and other early white New York jazzmen. Thus you will hear plenty of solos, but also skilfully arranged passages that make the six-piece band sound much bigger than it is, and you will hear some quite obscure tunes.
