◮◮◮❅ ❄ A Lonely Ice Lab in a Boreal Forest: Frigid Research ❄ ❅◮◮◮ unofficial mixtape v.1.2 by Tim Sliwinski i¢epunk is an obscure, “frozen” microgenre, born and quietly erased during the post–witch house moment of 2011. Emerging around the era of a Balam Acab album, it later partially dissolved into seapunk, while remaining tied to a distinct visual aesthetic. In the 2020s, related terms surfaced - frutiger glacier, cyber glacier, digital winter - all circling the same icepunk idea. Sonically, icepunk feels like extraterrestrials landing in the Arctic tundra: mystical, unfamiliar, and quietly futuristic. Ambient, watery, minimal tracks shaped its core, infused with fragments of tundra tribal rhythms and elements of witch house, glitch hop, leftfield, epic collage, progressive electronic, and dub. The approach was loose and unsystematic, yet nearly every fragment carries a sense of cold, Arctic emptiness, and the atmosphere of its time. As a microgenre, icepunk vanished almost without a trace, but the aesthetic survived. Between 2011 and 2014, across Blogspot, Pinterest, and Tumblr, its imagery lived on: ice, snow, early 3D graphics, webpunk, and Arctic-themed cursed/memes. In 2011, under the name Tiaam Basho, I made a few naive attempts to give the sound wider exposure. I released an icepunk-themed single and shared it wherever possible, while also writing early descriptions of the “tag” on Last.fm, and various blogs and social platforms. Later that year, a strange self-titled compilation was released, but the microgenre never fully took shape. Soon after, it faded from memory. Years later, in 2026, the mixtape V/A – ICEPUNK (arctic internet) emerges, drawn from my own memory and imagination (Tiaam Basho). This is not a revival of the genre, but an archival gesture - a return to a long-forgotten world of sounds and images. The compilation brings together echoes of those days, shaped by icepunk’s sound and influence. Perhaps it will inspire someone to create something new. Make some tea, put on your headphones, and step into the yurt. #icepunk #music #electronicmusic #leftfield #arctic
