Twente Youth Symphonic Orchestra TJSO performs the ballet music “Buchi Fil” (Edgar Palm; arr. D. Aalse) The ballet music “Buchi Fil” by Edgar Palm is inspired by the poem of the same name by the Curaçaoan writer and poet Pierre Lauffer (1920-1981). This piece of music, composed for piano performance, was arranged for symphony orchestra by Dennis Aalse at the request of the Palm Music Foundation. Edgar Palm (Curaçao, 1905 -1998) received piano lessons from his father, the Curaçao musician and composer Rudolf Palm. From the age of eleven, Edgar regularly replaced his father as organist of the Fortkerk on Curaçao. In 1924, Edgar Palm left for the Netherlands to study at the HTS. He managed to combine his studies with music. For example, during that period he gave his first piano recital in the city theatre of 's-Hertogenbosch. After his studies, Edgar Palm returned to Curaçao where he combined his work as an engineer at the oil refinery with giving numerous musical performances for many years. No fewer than 37 singles and 8 LPs with Curaçao dance music were released by him and his music ensemble. He later also recorded a CD with Charles Sweers with compositions for piano and violin by the Curaçao composer Jacobo Conrad. He has recorded his extensive knowledge of Curaçao music and musicians in his book “Music and Musicians of the Netherlands Antilles”. Edgar Palm has made a major contribution to the preservation of the musical heritage of Curaçao. In 1975 he received the Colá Debrot Prize from the Curaçao government for this. He was also appointed Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau and later Officer in the Order of Orange Nassau. From Venezuela he received the Francisco de Miranda tercera clase and later the Francisco de Miranda primera clase. He was an honorary member of the Sociedad Bolivariana. In 1991 he received the "Zilveren Anjer" from the “Cultuur Fonds” in the Netherlands. Edgar Palm wrote about seventy compositions, including two ballets. The Twente Youth Symphonic Orchestra TJSO (www.tjso.nl) conducted by Carl Wittrock, can be considered one of the best youth orchestras in the Netherlands.
