So this video is a bit of a DIY for hip testing! I've recently had a paper accepted for publishing (in fact, it may even be out now!) on the topic of hip dysplasia. Essentially, we found a case of DDH in an otherwise normal kid at an assessment at 4.5 months old. In Victoria, there is a gap between hip checks from 4 months until 8 months.. So if we hadn't routinely assessed this kids' hips, there is a chance it may have gone unnoticed until 8 months of age - an age that often requires surgery! So what is this video for then? Well, in it I give you an example of one particular hip test called the "Hip Abduction Test". This test is best done on a flat, firm but comfortable surface, and on an infant older than 8 weeks of age. We want to see nice symmetry in that motion! BUT! If your child is uncomfortable, they start crying, or you are noticing one side different to the other - please get your child properly assessed by their health professional. One important note here; even if this test feels the same on both sides that doesn't mean your child is fine - they could just have problems in both hips!! Be sure to get your kids hips checked!
