Leftist candidate Michelle Bachelet has been re-elected as Chile's president in a landslide victory. She garnered around 63 percent support, the highest proportion of votes any presidential candidate has won since Chile returned to holding democratic elections in 1989. Her rival Evelyn Matthei, of the ruling conservative Alianza coalition was gracious in defeat. "We have known for a while now that Michelle Bachelet has been elected to be the next President of Chile. I'm going to call her to congratulate her and to wish her every success," Matthei told her supporters. Matthei only managed 37 percent - the right's worst performance in two decades.
