Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., questioned Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the Senate Judiciary Committee continued its Supreme Court confirmation hearings March 23. Blackburn’s wide-ranging questions concerned abortion, violent crime, gun rights and Jacksons’ views on those convicted of sex crimes. She also continued an earlier focus of her questioning: Jackson's past sentences in child pornography convictions. “I believe that all child predators are dangerous, that the behavior they engage in is horrible, that it needs to be taken seriously by the court and by Congress in setting the penalties for their behavior,” Jackson said. Blackburn also asked about Jackson’s record on compassionate release and her views on critical race theory when it comes to her decisions as a judge. Wednesday was senators’ final day to question Jackson, who was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, she will be the first Black woman on the high court. On the final day of the hearings March 24, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hear from friends and colleagues of Jackson about her temperament and approach to the law.
