WE ALMOST SANK OUR NARROWBOAT AGAIN! NO I'M NOT JOKING! - 618

Firstly, in today's video, we'll head out on a lovely big 12-mile walk, well, it was supposed to be 12 miles! But I actually couldn't complete it as I forgot a vital thing that prevented me from completing the whole walk, so we had to cut it short. The idea was to do a massive round walk from Red Bull, up onto a 200 metre ridge line, where sits the Mow Cop castle! Well its not actually a castle, it's made to look like that! It's actually just a folly! In the second half of the video, we head through the massive Harecastle tunnel and onto Stoke-on-Trent. where we'll head along the summit pound of the Trent and Mersey, through the potteries and urban decay, before reaching the end of the pound, where we'll join the Caldon canal, and head away from Stoke and into the Staffordshire Moorlands, but at one lock in particular, we almost sank narrowboat Olive. Again. The first tunnel at Harecastle was designed by canal engineer James Brindley and opened in 1777 when the Trent and Mersey Canal was completed. Brindley’s tunnel was about 2,880 yards (2.6 km) long and was built without a towpath. Because there was no path for horses inside the tunnel, boats had to be moved through by a slow and difficult process called “legging,” where workers lay on their backs on the boat and pushed against the tunnel roof with their feet to move the boat forward. The journey through the tunnel could take over two hours, and the air inside was often smoky and poorly ventilated. By the early 19th century the original tunnel had become too narrow and poorly ventilated for the increasing amount of canal traffic. As a result, a second and larger tunnel was built alongside it. This new tunnel was designed by the famous civil engineer Thomas Telford and opened in 1827. Telford’s tunnel included improvements such as a straighter alignment, a slightly larger profile, and a system of ventilation shafts to improve air circulation for boat crews and horses. Over time, the original Brindley tunnel became unstable due to ground movement and mining activity in the area. It was eventually closed in 1914, leaving Telford’s tunnel as the only one still in use today. The surviving tunnel is about 2,926 yards (around 2.7 km) long and remains one of the longest canal tunnels in the United Kingdom. Today, Harecastle Tunnel is operated by the Canal & River Trust. Boats must book a timed passage and are guided through by tunnel keepers who control traffic from each end to ensure safety. Passing through the tunnel takes roughly 30–40 minutes, and it remains one of the most famous and memorable sections of the Trent and Mersey Canal for modern boaters.
