Tan Hock Seng Confectionery (陳福成餅家) | 86 Telok Ayer Street (Permanently Closed)

Established since 1931 at China Street by founder Mr Tan Tiam, over the last 90 years, the confectionery specialising in Hokkien pastries has been offering all-time favourite traditional treats. Among the best sellers are Beh Teh Saw (Horse Hoof Biscuit), Phong Piah (Fragrant Biscuit) and Tau Sar Piah (Mung Bean Paste Biscuit). During the mooncake festival, traditional mooncakes filled with like lotus, red bean pastes, and Wu Ren (mixed nuts) are made. Preserved winter melon and lard are also used. Besides those, Scholar Piah (状元饼) is also produced once a year in September. Interestingly, the third-generation owner, Mr Tan Boon Chai, shared that the pastry used to be associated with gambling in the past, in a light-hearted manner. Sadly, the shop will be close end Nov 2021 due to a manpower shortage and rising rental fees. Mr Tan hopes that someone can take over the business to help preserve the heritage and tradition. Beh Teh Saw means “Horse Hoof Biscuit". It is often mistaken to have water chestnut filling because of the word 马蹄. In fact, its name is derived from its appearance that resembles horse hoof when baked in big urns.
