Aomori, located in the northern part of Japan’s main island, is around 700 kilometers (about 435 miles) from Tokyo. But don’t worry, thanks to Japan’s fast bullet trains (Shinkansen), you can get there in about 3 to 4 hours. Once you're in Aomori, getting around is fairly easy with buses and taxis, or you can rent a car to explore the more remote and scenic spots. Let’s dive into the top 10 things to do in Aomori! 1. Nakano Momiji Yama. Nakano Momiji Yama is one of the best spots in Aomori for enjoying the stunning colors of autumn. The hillsides are covered with maple trees that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall, creating breathtaking views that are perfect for photos or a peaceful walk. Best time to visit, Fall (late October to early November). How to get there, It’s a 20-minute bus ride from Hirosaki Station. 2. Hosshoku Center. Hasshoku Center is a must-visit for seafood lovers! This bustling fish market in Hachinohe offers a wide variety of fresh, locally-caught fish and seafood. One of the best parts of visiting is the “Shichirin-mura” area, where you can buy fresh seafood and grill it right on the spot. The market also has plenty of other local delicacies, like dried fish, pickled products, and regional sweets. It’s the perfect place to experience Aomori’s food culture and try some of the freshest seafood around. Best time to visit: Any time of year. How to get there: It’s about a 10 minute taxi ride or bus from Hachinohe Station. 3. Hakkoda Ropeway. The Hakkoda Ropeway takes you up the Hakkoda Mountains, offering panoramic views of the lush forests below. In the fall, the trees are ablaze with color, and in winter, the area turns into a snow covered wonderland, perfect for skiing or snowboarding. Best time to visit. Fall for the colorful leaves, or winter for snow sports. How to get there, You can take a bus from Aomori Station or drive if you have a rental car. 4. Oirase Stream. Oirase Stream is a peaceful and scenic river surrounded by green moss, waterfalls, and trees. Walking along the stream is one of the most relaxing things you can do in Aomori, and it’s a favorite spot for nature lovers. The sound of flowing water and the serene surroundings make it feel like a magical escape from the world. 5. Seiryu-ji Temple. Seiryu-ji Temple is home to the largest seated bronze Buddha statue in Japan. Standing at 21 meters tall, this impressive statue draws visitors from all over.
