Walmart is hoping to catch thieves at the checkout lane by adding some help from above. The retailer is using cameras powered by artificial intelligence in an effort to crack down on checkout theft in more than 1,000 stores, according to a report from Business Insider. A Walmart spokeswoman tells the outlet the surveillance program began a few years ago and has been dubbed Missed Scan Detection. The whole idea is to cut down on what the industry refers to as shrinkage – or money going out the door, whether it’s because of theft, scanning errors, waste or fraud. It’s a costly problem. The National Retail Federation reports U.S. retailers lost an estimated $47 billion to shrinkage in 2017. As for Walmart specifically, the new cameras will watch both self-checkout registers and ones with cashiers behind them. Business Insider says the technology alerts the cashier when a problem arises, like when an item goes past the scanner without getting scanned. The same spokeswoman says the technology was rolled out to some stores a few years ago and shrink rates have since declined at those stores.
