In our previous video, we discussed liver metastasis, why it occurs, and how it develops. In this video, we will discuss which stage liver metastasis falls into. Liver metastasis means that cancer has spread from its primary organ, where it originally developed, to the liver, forming tumor nodules there. When planning or considering cancer treatment, two crucial pieces of information are needed: the type of cancer and how far it has spread. How the Stage of Cancer is decided? Cancer staging involves understanding if the cancer has spread to lymph nodes, nearby organs, or distant organs, which we refer to as distant metastasis. ⁠This staging is determined through imaging studies like CT scans, PET scans, or MRIs, which help us identify the extent of the cancer spread. Stages of Cancer Early Stage: The cancer is usually confined to the organ of origin. Stage 3: The cancer may have spread to nearby lymph nodes or organs. Stage 4: The cancer has spread to distant organs like the lungs, bones, brain, or liver. Liver metastasis is classified as a stage 4 disease. What is Stage 4 Cancer? While liver metastasis is a stage 4 condition, it's essential to note that stage 4 cancer encompasses a broad range of cases. For example, a patient with colon cancer that has spread only to a single 2 cm liver nodule is also considered stage 4. On the other hand, a patient with stomach cancer that has multiple liver metastases, as well as spread to the peritoneum and lungs, is also stage 4. Treatment and Prognosis The outcomes for these two cases of stage 4 cancer can be very different. In the first example, where the cancer spread is limited, aggressive treatment options like surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy may be possible, leading to better outcomes and even the possibility of a cure. In fact, up to 20% of liver metastases from Colon cancer are curable. However, in cases where the cancer has spread extensively, aggressive treatment may not be possible due to the patient's poor general condition and the extensive tumor volume.
