Author and history enthusiast Alan McLean begins this animated and dramatic talk as sixteen year old Louis Evans. Louis wrote a letter to his Grandfather back in England describing the drama of the wreck of the Fiji at the remote Moonlight Head on the Southwest coast of Victoria on September 6th, 1891. The crew was anxious as the iron hulled Fiji was carrying a large quantity of explosives. It took 12 hours for the Port Campbell rescue party to reach the remote the remote wreck site. All this time, the crewmen were clinging to the bowsprit of the ship hoping to be as far from the expected explosion as possible. Of the 25 crew, 11 lost their lives in the surf. Alan made the observation that those who stripped off their clothing arrived safely and near naked on the beach but of those who drowned most entered the water fully clothed! Such was the Victorian attitude in those times. The audience questions were particularly interesting with a diver in the audience, who had explored the Fiji wreck over the years, sharing his underwater experiences of the wreck site.
