The Sean McDermott Street Magdalene Laundry sits on a two-acre site in the northeast inner-city of Dublin (the Convent Lands). The Sisters of Our Lady of Charity formerly owned the laundry, which housed 150 women. It closed its doors in 1996—many women who resided in the institution left or were housed locally. This video was taken in 2010 and shows the church where the women went to mass, the corridor where the women entered the laundry building and the resident quarters of the women and the nuns. The Government has approved plans for a "national site of conscience", which will open at the former Magdalene laundry on Sean McDermott St in Dublin. The centre is intended to act "as a site of conscience to honour equally all those who were resident in Industrial Schools, Magdalen Laundries, Mother and Baby Institutions, Reformatories, and related institutions".
