Kerala is also one of the few places where matriarchy is still celebrated and matrilineal customs are followed. Yet, the number of dowry-related deaths are on the increase here. The latest name to a dowry-related death is that of Suhana, who was a student at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. Suhana died by suicide after her fiance allegedly called off their wedding because her family failed to meet his family’s dowry demands. As per the state crime records, there have been eight cases of dowry-related deaths reported till October this year. While eight might seem a small number, for a state that boasts of high literacy rate and a high sex ratio than the national average, this is extremely alarming. But why its still on a rise?
