Marburg is a university city and, with 76,401 inhabitants, the eighth largest city in Hesse. The city area extends on both sides of the Lahn to the west into the Gladenbacher Bergland and east across the Lahnberge to the edge of the Amöneburg Basin. The outstanding sights in Marburg are the Elisabethkirche, the Old University, the Landgrave's Castle, and the old town below it, which is called "Oberstadt" in Marburg. Marburg and its surroundings offer numerous attractions. Tourism represents a not insignificant economic factor in the university town. The main attractions are the Elisabethkirche, the castle and the historic old town. For overnight stays, Marburg offers, in addition to the campsite and a whole range of hotels and guesthouses in all price ranges, the DJH youth hostel in Jahnstraße (Weidenhausen) which offered 167 beds for many years and remains in close proximity to the Lahn and the university stadium, but was closed in January 2020. In 2009, the city showed 562,653 overnight stays with an offer of 5974 beds. Guided tours of the city (also on special topics such as fairy tales, romantic epochs, etc.) as well as fairy tale tours in the surrounding area to the "locations" of the Grimm fairy tales illustrated by the painter Otto Ubbelohde and the German Fairy Tale Route can be booked at the tourist information office. From April to October, there are casemate tours through the castle's underground fortifications every Saturday.
