Experience the rich bounty and history of Kiyokawa Family Orchards: A third-generation Japanese American-owned fruit orchard in the shadow of Oregon’s Mount Hood. Named the best apple orchard in the country by USA Today in 2018, the Kiyokawas offer 125 varieties of apples, as well as one of the most popular u-pick areas in the Hood River Valley. Kiyokawa family members have been stewards of the land since 1911, starting with Riichi Kiyokawa, who arrived following a wave of migration from Japan to the Hood River Valley — forming the second largest population of Japanese in Oregon outside of Portland. Over the next century, the Kiyokawas survived the forcible relocation of Japanese Americans to concentration camps during World War II and the continuing challenges of generational farming. Carrying forward that torch today is current owner Randy Kiyokawa, with support from his four older sisters and mom Michiko “Mich” Kiyokawa. A story collaboration between OPB’s “Oregon Experience” and “Superabundant” series.
