A Marine pressed his face into the black volcanic sand of Iwo Jima, knowing that lifting his head would draw the fire of the reinforced blockhouse cutting the beach to pieces. Around him, wrecked gear and bodies filled the shoreline as men kept pouring in, going flat almost immediately. Nothing moved inland. The blockhouse cut down anything that tried to rise. Then someone pushed past. He didn’t slow. He didn’t look back. He crossed open ground under fire with grenades in his hands, moving straight toward the blockhouse. A shout cut through the noise. “Basilone!” Marines who hadn’t moved since reaching the shore lifted their heads to see him. One stood, then another. They followed as he drove through the beach. The blockhouse never paused. Neither did John Basilone. As images and footage of actual events are not always available, Dark Docs sometimes utilizes similar historical images and footage for dramatic effect.
