• Scientific Name & Common Name Julidochromis transcriptus, sometimes trade-called “Kissi”, also “Pemba / Bemba” variant. Also called Masked Julie. • Natural Habitat & Range Found in Lake Tanganyika (northwestern shore, between Luhanga and Makabola in the DRC). Lives in rocky, sediment-rich shorelines, cracks and crevices among rocks. • Appearance Small size: up to ~ 7 cm total length. Colour pattern: bold horizontal / lengthwise stripes, dark contrasting bands on lighter body; masked face (stripe through eye). “Kissi” tends to have strong contrast. Juveniles show somewhat different pattern until mature. • Water Parameters / Tank Conditions • Temperature ~ 22-26 °C (≈ 72-79 °F) • pH strongly alkaline (≈ 8.0-9.0) • Hard water, high general hardness (GH/KH) / mineral content. • Tank setup: lots of rocks / caves / crevices; broken lines of sight; moderate-strong filtration, good oxygenation; substrate often sand or aragonite to help maintain hardness. • Behavior Territorial, especially to its own kind. More aggressive during breeding. Prefers hiding spots. Usually kept in pairs or small groups if space permits; but conspecific aggression can be problem in tight quarters. • Diet Omnivorous. In the wild, feeds on small crustaceans, insect larvae, molluscs among algae on rocks; in aquarium, feed high-quality flakes/pellets, plus frozen/live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia etc. • Breeding Substrate / cave spawner. Eggs laid inside caves or under overhangs; both parents guard. Egg hatching in a few days (temperature-dependent). Juveniles stay near parents initially. • Conservation Status Julidochromis transcriptus is listed as Least Concern (IUCN) as of last assessment. No major threats documented specifically for “Kissi” variant in mainstream sources.
