Violin soloist Gil Shaham works with NWS alum Alex Gonzalez on the first movement of Richard Strauss' Violin Sonata, Op. 18. Accompanied by Piano Fellow John Wilson. Shaham focuses on the operatic nature of the solo and mimicking the style of a soprano. Strauss is widely recognized today for his orchestral compositions, operas, and songs. He made a powerful entrance into the music world at the close of the 19th century, quickly gaining attention with a series of dynamic orchestral pieces and establishing himself as one of the foremost conductors of his time. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Strauss was a skilled pianist and violinist, a talent evident in the virtuosic writing of his *Violin Sonata*, composed in 1887 and premiered the following year. At just 23 years old, Strauss already had an impressive portfolio of instrumental music, including two symphonies, two concertos, two piano trios, a piano quartet, a string quartet, and a cello sonata, as well as numerous songs. #violin #strauss #sonata #audition Subscribe for weekly instructional videos, performances and incredible orchestral content: / @newworldsymphony Visit https://media.nws.edu to sign up for our FREE live streaming platform NWS Inside.
