The Satoyama Initiative:Toward a rural society in harmony with nature

It has been said that about one third of the land on earth is strongly influenced by cultivation and grazing. At the same time, it is important to maintain those secondary natures in a proper manner in order to protect biodiversity, since more than half of the species of flora and fauna on the globe are placed out of the so-called protected areas, such as agricultural landscape. The relationship between people and nature and the landscape built on it can be found all over the world including Japan. We call the landscapes built on the basis of the relationship between people and nature the SATOYAMA Landscape. Japan gave the name of the SATOYAMA Initiative to establishment of universal philosophy for sustainable maintenance and use of natural resources such as SATOYAMA Landscape and the efforts to promote it, and now propose and address it to the world.
