The Reeder family was snorkeling in the Florida Keys when 10-year-old Jameson was attacked by a bull shark. He was airlifted to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital’s Miguel “Mike” B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center where doctors worked tirelessly to save his life. They succeeded, but the severity of his injuries led to the amputation of his leg below the knee. After this initial lifesaving surgery, experts from Nicklaus Children’s Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Spine Institute and the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery collaborated on a multifaceted care plan for Jameson. Today, Jameson continues to be fitted for prosthetics for different activities and throughout his development. He has thankfully been able to return to playing his favorite sport—baseball.
