The series follows a group of humans trapped inside a circus-themed virtual reality game, where they are subject to the instructions of a rogue artificial intelligence. Gooseworx pitched the series to Glitch, inspired by 1990s computer-generated imagery and the short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream. The series began production in 2022, and its pilot episode premiered on Glitch Productions' YouTube channel on October 13, 2023. The pilot went viral and became one of the most-viewed animation pilots on the platform, with over 270 million views by February 2024. The short was praised by critics for its animation and dark themes, and it was nominated for an Annie Award. The full series entered production following the pilot's popularity. "The Penis (Eek!)" was first uploaded to the now-defunct website 8bitcollective.com on April 10, 2009, and quickly gained notoriety for its catchy tune and unusual title. Later, numerous YouTube reuploads of the song would appear, with this being the earliest and most popular upload, posted by the user Nicholas Cook OM on November 17, 2009. After the release and in the early years of YouTube, "The Penis (Eek!)" would become a popular song to make YTPMVs of. However, in early 2023, it would see a resurgence in the form of even more YTPMVs, melody changes, arrangements, and edits of existing videos, due to its "silly" melody and samples.
